Photographing Children; Let Them Be Little

I took my kids, Jack and Audrey, down to the beach the other evening for some photos for a number of reasons. 1. We had such a beautiful sunny day, I knew the sunset would be lovely. 2. I haven't taken many photos of them recently. 3. I have been thinking A LOT lately about my style of capturing photos of children.

Newborn Session, Baby Lincoln

I met Baby L and his family at their stunning home for a cozy and casual (and very fun!) newborn photoshoot. This shoot was a blast! Not only was their Golden Doodle Utah hilarious, striking poses, getting in every shot, sucking a doggie soother (FOR REAL!) and simply making sure we didn't forget about him, Baby L's parents were pretty darn cool as well.

Maternity Session, Nicole

I was asked by Nicole's closest friends to swing by a celebration they were holding for her to take some maternity photos and some group photos of all the friends. They surprised Nicole with these photos as a gift... how cool and sweet is that!?! I think it's a wonderful idea. We were lucky to have the hostess's beautiful back yard to capture the maternity photos in and Nicole is stunning! She has the most cutest bump!

Summer Session, The Coster Family

We snuck this beach session on Cowichan Lake in just before school started for the kids and we were fortunate to have a beautiful sunny evening. These girls have the most stunning blue eyes, don't you think? And the best personalities. AND they also had their nails painted pretty and new rings for the occasion. Their parents were pretty cool too. For this collection, I played around with some B/W edits and I'm really digging them. Overall, it was a fantastic evening.

Celebration Sessions, They said "I Do"

Let me start off by saying I think it's a pretty special job to be hired to capture a couple's wedding day... the day they come together to say I do and commit to a lifetime of love and partnership surrounded by their friends and family. This summer I was lucky to capture three weddings (and I have one more small one still coming up).

Summer Session, Extended Family Photos

This was my second time shooting at Eves Park and I knew it would be amazing again, especially with the sunny haze we had that evening. The haze was created by the wild fire smoke that blew over to the island that week and although you would never wish for that, it did look neat in the photos of Amanda and her family's summer session. This was an extended family session with three sisters, their partners and their mom and her partner. It also included two cute little dudes. I had THE toughest time finalizing their collection as there were way too many favourites. Here are some of them:

Summer Minis, Lavender Farm Sessions

Who doesn't love lavender? Well I sure am obsessed with it and holding sessions at the local lavender farm was a must last year. I was excited when the owners, Greg and Aurora Douglas welcomed me back this year (and they also said next year we're a go too, wahoo!). I met the families in the evenings just as the sun was starting to set and the sessions were super fun. There were a total of 12 kids I photographed (one family didn't wish to have any photos shared on social media of their little girl).

Summer Session, Ellison Family

Bird's Eye Cove Farm is one of my favourite locations to shoot and so naturally I was excited when Kaleena asked if I could get permission to meet there for their family session. The owner told me it was the perfect time as the grass was still very long too, so between the grass, the beautiful sunset and their cute family, this session was a photographer's dream.

*Side note: sweet little Harper (the middle child) helped me take a few photos at the end including the very last photo in this blog post). How cool is that?!

Summer Session, Waneless Family

I met Kelsey and her husband Kyle, their sweet little guy Sawyer as well as their fur baby during the early morning sunny glow at a new location I've never photographed at before, the Garry Oak Reserve in Duncan. I can see why this spot is popular among photographers. It was heavenly. And this family was just as amazing. Especially Sawyer who gave me lots of sweet smiles.

Spring Session, Kolk Family

When Carly asked me about booking a family session with her three boys I would be lying to say I didn't wonder, "Will I have trouble getting all three boys in the frame at once?...". However, these three boys were so well-behaved (good job mom and dad!) and totally hammed it up. They were also so handsome and cute. The entire session was fun, relaxed and the setting at Eves Provincial Park was pretty spectacular too. It was my first time shooting there and I know it won't be my last.

Spring Minis, Family + Motherhood

We waited for what felt like forever for Spring to finally settle in and even then there were super chilly evenings and mornings. However, I persevered and still offered two weekends of Spring Mini Sessions, with a family option and motherhood option, and couldn't be more thrilled with the outcome.
